Golf facility expansion
26 January 2011
Following the opening of the Bob Torrance School of Golf sportscotland is now investing in expanding the Golf Training Facility at Inverclyde.
In 2009 the training area was expanded to accommodate the ‘long drives’ of the professional golfers under the tuition of Bob Torrance and the PGA professionals.
Use has increased to a level that the centre is now looking to further expand the facility towards the southern boundary.
This land is designated as ‘recreational land’ and is also within the boundaries of Clyde Muirshiel Country Park. The Centre has been working with Rangers of the Park to develop a Biodiversity policy which includes the wetlands & natural area to the south of the golf facility.
This new expanded facility will include a junior practice area, more practice holes, bunkers, and tees and will be available to the clubs, schools and golfers of Largs. Further to this over 1000 school children stay at Inverclyde on educational sports weeks, all of which enjoy the experience of learning to play golf, which makes a busy facility in need of further expansion. There are also 120 individual members.
Mr John Kent, Principal of Inverclyde commented “This is one of the planned developments of the centre’s land and has always been in the proposal, right back to the 1980s when the first golf facility developments took place. This further enhances an excellent facility for the area and will allow all abilities of golf to practice at the same time, whilst acknowledging and improving the environmental landscape”
The centre plans to develop this facility this summer.
